Native Customizations / Functionality

Hi,

I was looking for guidance regarding native functionality for two features.

1) Search without using BuddyPress

2) Front-end user submissions without BuddyPress

I can’t seem to find any documentation on either, and have downloaded several plugins to perform both tasks/features, but would prefer a native solution.

If there isn’t native functionality, is there a way to add short codes to the header without altering the header.php file?

Grid Views

1) I’ve leveraged the grid plugin that comes with the theme. Everything seems to work, but was interested in learning if there was functionality that forces a specific size (300 x 250px) based on media queries. For instance; if screensize is 1280px, each of the 4 grid images would be 300 x 250px, 10px borders verse increasing/decreasing in size.

2) Also interested in seeing if there is a way to remove title/description/read more functionality without altering .php files.
