Odd use of user name?

Hello, with one of my tests as a participant, I created a profile and input first and last name and a user name.

First name I just put D for my initial

Last name I just put Rod short for my last name

User name I assumed would be my profile nickname I put Neo

When I went to view my profile it used D Rod as my profile name and an @Neo underneath.

This seems like an odd thing to do as there is no anonymity from a persons real name. This can be a concern for a dating site?

If I use Neo as a username can it be used and not reveal someones real name?  I don’t get the @ part under a profile name but I understand it in the context of someone mentioning a member in an activity feed or forum etc.

Also my original profile as an admin seems to have an @myemailaddress under my profile name? I’d rather have that anonymous as well? Though I do recall somewhere reading when I first started that wordpress does this by a default?

I am confused with this. I don’t think it’s a good approach. Is there something I did incorrectly? Can it be set to not show a members first and last name with their signup? And strictly just use their user nickname?
