I am having issues with BuddyPress – it will not install and simply says the destination folder already exists. My site is hosted through WP Engine, and I see there are known compatibility issues. I tried the solution that 7thQueen provides – copying the code to the child theme functions.php. The first time I tried, it crashed my site. I received the following fatal error: 6 PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_is_group() in /nas/content/live/ccalumni/wp-content/themes/kleo-child/functions.php on line 17

The second time I tried, it says “Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.”

Can someone please provide more thorough instructions on how to fix this?
