I apologize for the scope of this question. I just don’t know enough about BuddyPress, Memberships, bbPress, to understand how best to do this:
1. Create a double opt-in for ‘subscribers’ who get a free download (I’m not using a mail service to begin with – small number of subscribers – I just want access to the database.). Subscribers see the same part of the WP site as non-subscribers (for now).
2. Two paid membership levels with access to restricted content.
3. User forum, probably with areas restricted to paid membersI know in a conceptual sense what to do but I’m not certain how the plugins relate – is there some redundancy, do I need something else? Can someone point me in the right direction to better educate myself? Where do I start?

1. You probably want to check a newsletter plugin like http://wordpress.org/plugins/newsletter-sign-up/
2. Use recommended plugin Paid memberships Pro and follow the documentation that comes with the theme
