    I have copied the general-header-section.php into the child folder and made changes but they are not displaying or using the child version of general-header-section.php

    Is this correct?

    Did you keep the same directory structure? Do you have the child theme enabled? Do you have caching enabled?

    No I never had the same directory structure but I have now and it works 🙂 many thanks for the help
