Creating a one-page site and don’t want users to have to leave that home page unless for specific reason. So users click a button and another window slides in from left or right containing text, and if necessary that window will contain another button prompting for further action.

Hmmm. Difficult. You can perhaps use a giant tabbed interface. Look at the VC tabs shortcode. http://seventhqueen.com/themes/kleo/tabs-pills/
Outside of that, maybe look for a plugin or hire someone to build it for you.
