Activation error, membership count is wrong

The backend shows 33 subscribers and the front page counter shows 23. Also, a customer emailed me with an error message upon activation error ” says insert code, where do I give the customer code, the website is like a month old. I hired you guys to configure it so not sure what is going on.Please help
