Hi, I’ve changed “Friends” to “Contacts” in BuddyPress via adding and editing the language file and I’ve managed to change the slug.

But I’m not having any luck changing the text below the icons in the BuddyPress profile navigation menu. Does anyone know where or how I can change “Friends” below the icon to “Contacts?” I’m not seeing it anywhere, thanks in advance!

Hi Sharmstr, I’ve done all of that except trying the very old localisation plugin, and still the FRIENDS text below the icon remains. I’d prefer to do it without using a plugin even if I have to change a core BuddyPress file.

Hi Sharmster, I haven’t found a solution yet.

I have the language files setup and and they changed it in most places, I’ve changed the slug, but these two items are escaping me.

“Friends” under the icon and “Friendships” in the submenu.

Wow… did you read this? https://buddypress.org/support/topic/buddypress-2-1-bp-language/

I was just trying to go through steps in that link I sent you and found that the bp-language directory wasnt there. I did a search and came across the above topic about it. I only made it through the first page. Sounds like a sh*t circus if you ask me.

I dont have any need to do this on my site, so I’m hesitant to spend the time trying to figure it out. Let me know if you read that topic before and it didnt help.

At this point, I think you’re at the mercy of the Buddypress team sorting it out. With that said, I’ll try to help if you need me to. Let me know.

LOL I came across that the other night too!

What ended up doing was downloading the language files that someone else had already changed on wpmudev.org. I can’t find the link but if anyone needs them I’ve uploaded them to this post.

I went through them a little more with the po editor.

Then I created the bp-languages directory and uploaded the files there and and it worked.

I skipped all the crap on that page! 🙂

I’ll keep looking for a solution and will share if I find it, thanks for all the help sharmstr!

I’m not sure what needs to be changed in the po file, but there’s also one in kleo/languages. Not sure if it applies to this or not.

Thanks sharmstr! I’ll have a look at it tonight or tomorrow, I’m thinking it might be in the theme somewhere!

I found a few more things in the theme language file that I needed to change but nothing to change it in those two places lol. I’m about ready to just search through the buddypress plugin files and find it. 🙂

hello, those belong to Buddypress so you need to translate Buddypress plugin strings. Since 2.1 Buddypress version the translation files for it should stay in wp-content/languages/plugins just like @sharmstr said https://buddypress.org/support/topic/buddypress-2-1-bp-language/

you need to generate the .mo file and not to modify the .po file

Also other strings like Followers come from your Follow plugin and so on 🙂

Sorry to rejuvenate this old post but maybe it will help someone else. So I eventually ended up trying to create new .po .mo files from the .pot file using Poedit. The first couple times I tried it, Poedit gave me a couple errors, I ignored them and saved anyways and of course it didn’t work.

Then I tried again last week after a friend reported he successfully changed this field in BuddyPress using Poedit. But this time instead of trying to use the top menu to open the .pot file, I started Poedit fresh and used the 2nd button on the Welcome screen when you start Poedit, “Create New Translation.” Made some changes to see if it would work, uploaded them to my bp-languages folder and the new translation files work fine and I was able to change the text I wanted.

So it turned out to be a Poedit issue or maybe just my ignorance of the software, thanks everyone for all the help!
