category description – duplicate content

When I add a description to a category or tag, it shows on all pages under that category or tag. I’m trying to avoid duplicate content and removed the descriptions I added. How can I prevent the description from showing on a paginated page? I only want it showing on the first page. Thanks!

Hello Laura!

The description on the category and tag pages have not been added because of the duplicate content issue.

For example, if I post a description for the category “Heartburn Causes” (https://howtotreatheartburn.com/category/heartburn-causes/) the description will show on page two (https://howtotreatheartburn.com/category/heartburn-causes/page/2/) as well as page one of the archive. I’m trying to have all descriptions show on page one only for all categories and tags. Is there code I can add to a PHP file? Or is there some way to accomplish this with CSS as you suggest?

Hello Laura,

I have added the description back to the pages I mentioned above. Descriptions are duplicated in all category archives when I post a description. The same goes for tags. I’d really like to be able to modify the code to prevent this duplicated content.

Hello. I’m probably not being clear. The description is on multiple pages. I don’t want Google to see it as duplicate content. Can the description for categories and tags be only on page one of the archive? It’s showing on all archive pages: one, two, three…

The same description shows up on all of these pages:
