Featured images and other options for post types don’t work for unsupported post types

It seems that for all other post types they all display the same without any options to change things such as whether or not the featured image shows, metadata, etc. Can this be made as optional for other posts as well? Such as if one created another post type like “books” as an example. I’d like to be able to modify how it shows like how I can for other post types. Not sure if this was missed and is a bug or if I should have placed it into feature requests.
