hi, is there any way to stop users deleting groups they have created?

Well, the user that creates a group is that group admin so is not exactly logic, you should search for a buddypress related extension/plugin to help you achieve such behavior.

I believe you received the correct answer. This is not a kleo function. If you cant find a plugin, ask on the buddypress forum since its their code you will have to edit/override.
