How to add fields to the user profile?

Hi,
I want to add some custom fields for the user profile. Like i want to add fields for city, state and passion. Please provide the guidance to complete the requirement. Should i use any plugin to do it or just write some code? (currently the name field is there in the user profile)

Go to http://YOURWEBSITE.COM/dev/wp-admin/users.php?page=bp-profile-setup

Add your desired fields, then go to your user profile and complete that fields.

On the server i can access that page but not on the localhost.
Is it a problem or i am doing it in a wrong way?
