You’ll need a plugin to add images to categories. There are several to choose from. Here’s one https://wordpress.org/plugins/categories-images/

I preferred integration into the theme or a hack but I look at this

Add it to the Feature Request theme. 🙂 If you want something now, then follow my links. Its how I’m doing something similar with the titles.
