Like many others, I’ve been using BP Direct Menus plugin to fill in gaps in the native menu items from BP.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-direct-menus/
In particular, to add message count and user avatar to my menu bar. (Sadly, it’s missing notification count as far as I can tell).
However, having just disabled “Friends” feature in BP, the direct menus plugin is now crashing. Turns out that before doing anything it gets all counts for everything regardless of whether they are going to be used or not = wasted server load.

It’s for this reason I feel that SeventhQueen should do their own version of this plugin, removing the duplication of menu items already present in BP (which most people don’t know about because they’re hidden by default) and doing a much better job of the remaining menu items. For example, instead of me having to add %unreadmessagecount% to the caption I could just tick a box “Display counter” plus have an “Only when unread” option to hide counter when not needed. In particular, the menu items could be made to output html that natively fits with the theme design, for example adding additional class to messages link when there are unread messages, and so on.

Not sure, but I think if you replace %unreadmessagecount% with %(unreadmessagecount)% counter appears only if you have unread messages.April 27, 2014 at 22:51 #16215guy_fraserParticipantNope, it doesn’t support notifications without some extra hacks:

The biggest problem is that it’s getting all the counts (read: lots of SQL queries = server load) regardless of whether it will need them.
