Hello, I noticed a new Privacy setting under user profiles? I played with this for a bit and it doesn’t seem to work. What is its intended purpose?

I logged in as Admin and clicked on it to Private: Visible only to the user,

however this changed all user profiles to the same?

I logged in as a user without admin status and selected the same, Private.

I logged in back to my Admin profile and looked at that Users profile and it was back to Logged in Users.

Wondering if I’m missing its purpose? This would be a great function to have if a user can hide from searches and appearing on the Members search page or as a Recently Active, etc.

This is something I was definitely looking to have in the future. Is it broken?

    Hi,

Thanks for contacting as about profile field privacy, this feature has been in BuddyPress for some time and allows users to see an overview of the individual profile field privacy.

When you create a profile field you can choose the default privacy of the field and whether or not a user may override this settings.

Can you please provide me with login credentials for a test standard user account and an administrator so I can test this for you. In the meantime please try disabling your caching temporarily and testing again, it’s entirely possible you ‘re seeing cached values for the fields if your caching is too aggressive or if you’re caching files / HTML for logged in users.

    Thanks,

    Kieran

    Hi,

To use the other account I will need your permission to disable the maintenance plugin you’re using as well as disabling maintenance mode in KLEO.

    Please let me know,

    Kieran.

Hi, do you mean the Under Construction? Yes that’s fine. I don’t know what the maintenance mode in Kleo is though? Thanks

    Hi,

I have logged into your site and checked that the BuddyPress feature ‘Profile Visibility’ is working, I found it to be working for both admin and users (see screenshot).

It took me a little while to realize you were referring to the other tab titled ‘Privacy’, this is not a function of BuddyPress, and appears to be a part of rtMedia you can go to WP Admin > rtMedia > Settings > Tab: Privacy to enable or disable this option (see screenshot).

The option does work but maybe not in that way you were expecting, it sets the default privacy level for updates on the activity page (see screenshot).

I think the function you’re after is ‘Profile Visibility’ which can be accessed in the same area and does work as an overall privacy function for users.

    Thanks,

    Kieran

Hi Kieran, Privacy.png screenshot is what I was referring to. It didn’t seem to work for me however I have other pressing issues and will try again later. I will close the thread, and thanks for the details!

I’m going to open this back up because not only is it still not working, it has made worse issues. I am logged in as Admin and as 2 users on 3 different platforms. As an Admin if I select any privacy change it effects ALL other Users on the site. So if I select Visible to only to User, every profile is switched to the same.

Worse as a User I have selected Visible only to User setting and now the entire database of Users redirects to a 404 I can no longer view anyone’s profile even when changing back status to Visible to Registered Users.

So after playing with this for a half hour or so and basically see it not effective in any way for me, I can no longer view Profiles unless I’m logged in as an Admin.

Yes it is RTMedia. Should I take it to their support?

    Hi,

If you’re experiencing the issues described I would advise you to contact rtMedia support directly through either the WordPress.org plugin page or if you have any of their premium services directly through the support forum on their website.

Thank you Kieran, I think the 404 was an issue on my end with some other fixes we tried.
