portfolio thumbnail cropping – disable

Hi,

I would like to  disable the cropping that occurs on a portfolio featured image in the portfolio list page. I don’t see an option to this so I assume that the theme functions will need to be edited. Any suggestion on how to approach this or a starting point would be much appreciated.

I want to display a grid of portfolio items based on the featured image. The images are logo files, I do not want any cropping. I want the image to constrain to the width of the portfolio_item container with auto-height. Right now it appears to be full height and then cropping on the sides.
