is managing related what content appears in the related articles carousel that shows up at the bottom of each post page a function of the Kleo theme, or wordpress core? it’s not clear to me how the related articles are selected, or how to make a custom selection of related articles.

The related articles are part of the kleo theme, and the posts that appear there are pulled from the same category as the post that you see it in random order.
