Hello,
I have remarked that when somebody is sending a private message from Activity page to a member to whom (s)he is not friend, the recipient is not able to access the message. He receives an email about the message that was sent to him with a link to the conversation, however when he tries to access the link, he receives the 404 error – Page not found. The message is not available/visible under “Mentions” in the Activity tab either. As soon as the 2 members becomes friends, the page and link is being accessible.
Please note I have activated the main theme and this issue can be reproducible there as well.
Thanks for looking into this issue.
Regards.

RHi there!!! Help others from the community and mark any reply as solution if it solved your question. Mark as a solutionSeptember 4, 2018 at 23:00 #208480lusienParticipantHi Radu,
I have done several tests and following is not working with twenty seventeen as well:
1. User 1 goes in Activity and is sending a message to user2 using @user2 tag
2. In such a case, user 2 receives an email where it is mentioned that user 1 has mentioned user 2 in a discussion (see picture step3.png).
3. User 2 receives also a notification under notifications within the site activity panel where as well he gets the message that user1 mentioned him (see picture step1.png).
4. If the user2 click on the notification from point 3 above, he is directed to Mentions but he gets the message that there is nothing in there (see picture step2.png)
5. On the same time if he clicks on the link that is coming in the email he receives he gets the 404 page error with all themes (see picture spet4.png and step5.png).I hope you can follow my scenario and that the attached pictures will help.
Regards.

If all above steps with the same results can be reproduced using default wp theme may be a buddypress issue not a theme one. In this case this issue should be reported on the buddypress trac : https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/report/1
To can re-confirm before reporting, i recommend you to leave only buddypress activated while using default wp theme and then resave permalinks from wp-admin -> settings -> permalinks -> save changes.
Did you had changed something under wp-admin -> emails ? If yes, backup your database and re-install buddypress emails from wp-admin -> tools -> buddypress -> re-install buddypress emails.
If can be again reproduced using only their plugin activated it’s confirmed.
Personally i haven’t tested this behaviour with default theme i don’t have a email catcher or similar on my machine yet. I will do it tomorrow.
Cheers
RHi there!!! Help others from the community and mark any reply as solution if it solved your question. Mark as a solutionSeptember 6, 2018 at 19:50 #208750lusienParticipantHi Radu,
Thanks for the clarifications. I was able to go one more time through the all steps mentioned and the issue was reproducible. However, not sure where the problem is, in buddypress or in rtMedia for WordPress, BuddyPress and bbPress plugin? because the option to send a message as private is available only when rtmedia plugin is active.
I would appreciate if you can test as well just to confirm one more time and check if it is obvious for you where this is coming from: issue is that link received in the email when user 1 mentions user 2 in a post and send a message as private directs to a page that is not accessible – 404 error.
Regards.
September 7, 2018 at 18:17 #208850RaduModeratorHi,
Not sure, the messages are part of the buddypress core so if you are on your logged in profile you cannot have any Private Message button, you will have instead under buddypress profile -> messages -> compose.
So if you are on someone else profile you will have the Private Message button but no composer link under buddypress profile -> messages -> compose.
No matters if rtmedia, bbpress activated or not this it’s a bp core feature.

For the notifications issue sorry but i had not have the environment ready, i’m running on localhost and tried to install mail catcher but it makes me a lot of problems…i hate that…
IF you had said using only buddypress plugin happens that, you can report it directly since our theme not running at all.
Cheers

What I meant with rtmedia and private message is as showed in the picture attached. The option to send public, logged users, friends or private message is appearing only when rtmedia is activated. But I agree that messages are from BuddyPress and probably they missed this special case.
Let me know if you understand the scenario I referenced above.

SO if you encounter the same only with Buddypress plugin activated and using default theme it’s a BP issue, at this moment tried hard to make the mailtrap to work on my local environment bout for some reason the emails are not catching and it you already confirmed the bug you can report it directly.
Cheers
RHi there!!! Help others from the community and mark any reply as solution if it solved your question. Mark as a solutionSeptember 10, 2018 at 19:20 #209220lusienParticipantHi Radu,
Glad that you understand now. But one remark, rtmedia needs to be as well enabled as the option to sent a message the way I described is possible only when this plugin is also installed. BuddyPress alone does not offer the option to sent a message as private or only to friends or logged users.
But with the 2 plugins and default theme installed I was able to reproduce the issue.
Regards.
September 11, 2018 at 18:26 #209315RaduModeratorI see, please report that on buddypress and also on rtmedia since it may be caused by one of them or by both in combo.
