    Hi,
i have a problem of SPAM in private message of Buddypress.

I thought to install one of this plugins:

    – BuddyPress reCAPTCHA
    – WangGuard
    – BuddyPress-Honeypot
    – etc…

But  more of them weren’t updated from many years and are not tested with my version of WP.
How can I do? Can you help me?

    Thanks for the reply.

    Alex

    Hi @b4web,

Thanks for reaching out today and sorry to hear you’re having spam issues. Dealing with this issue will require more than one method as the spammers are already registered on your site. You’ll have to identify the accounts that are sending the spam and remove them, they’ll usually have something in common, often a .ru or throw away email address.

The next step is to stop spam reaching your site, I would suggest WangGuard to block spam email addresses and Invisible reCaptcha for WordPress to stop other spam registering on your site https://wordpress.org/plugins/invisible-recaptcha/.

If you do use the latter plugin enter both required keys and only tick the registration option under the BuddyPress tab.

    Hope this information helps,

    Kieran.

    Hi @KieranSQ ,
thanks for the reply; Invisible recaptcha is very interesting, I’ll install it soon.

    I have one doubt:
    – I’ve read that Wanguard was closed month ago. There is an alternative or could I use them elsewhere?

    Hi,

Not that I know of, WangGuard should be okay to use for a few months yet though. I was party to a discussion of several developers who were looking at forking WangGuard and continuing releasing it under a new(ish) name, if I hear more about that I’ll let you know.

There is a topic here on WordPress that might be of interest to you, though I haven’t tried the plugin they’re discussing. https://wordpress.org/support/topic/alternatives-going-forward-with-or-without-wanguard/.

If in doubt about any plugin please use a test environment first, whether that is local or server level staging, it’s better safe than sorry. This is true too for updates to major plugins like BuddyPress.

    Thanks,

    Kieran
