stuck on welcome page when logged in

when I go to my site, which is using the Home Register welcome page, and click on “already a member? please log in here” it pops up the log in form, then says I’m already logged in and to refresh. But when it refreshes, rather than taking me into the site it just goes back to the welcome page.

This isn’t acceptable. It’s non-intuitive. If someone is already logged in and ends up on the main page, clicking “already logged in?” should actually give access to the site. Instead I’m going in  circles and can’t get past the welcome page. Please don’t give me a “type [url/otherpagename.php] into your browser] as a reply because my members who may encounter the same problem won’t know to do that, nor should they have to.

If already logged in, the user should be taken to the content not the welcome page.
