ParticipantHi,
SweetDate has helped our newspaper develop a thriving dating site, so I’m a fan. It’s also been pretty trouble-free technically over the last three years we’ve been using it, which I’m happy about for sure. But it means I know next to nothing about how the system works, so please bear with me if my questions are basic.
Our host alerted me the other day to unusually high calls to the email server from our dating site. The host can’t tell from the logs and headers if it’s malicious or not. They appear to be message notifications — as in email notifications about internal BuddyPress messages that people are sending to each other. The bulk of them occur between 11pm and 3am each night.
Do you have any sense if that sort of traffic would be normal?
The host asked me if there could be fake users registered in our site who are using their accounts to generate lots of mail, which lead me into some research on the WangGuard plugin and its questionable status. Is that anti-spam service shut down, and if so is there another one you recommend?
And with or without WangGuard, is there a tool to examine registered accounts for malicious activity and/or suspicious behaviour?
Finally, and related to WangGuard, my host suggests installing a recaptcha tool for anti-spam help. What do you think of that idea? (Is it useful, can you suggest a plugin that will mesh well with SweetDate, etc.)
Thanks for any help and light you can shed on this high email situation.
