User Profile Page

I created a new user on my phone to see what the profile page would look like for a user. On my phone after logging in, it looked like the wordpress backend and not the themed profile page.

Also, what should a new users role default be? Subscriber? Contributor? Does it matter to work correctly with buddypress?

Also, is there a way for a user to add a profile photo upon registering?
