Using PMPro to restrict Portfolio Items or (better still) Portfolio Categories

I have mastered restricting Post categories to PMPro registered members but I cannot work out how to do it for Portfolio Items or (better still) Portfolio Categories.

Is this possible by changing a setting and if not is there a workaround?

We use Portfolios to embed videos and it is these I am really looking to protect against non-paying non-registered members.

Its easy enough to add the pmpro meta box to the portfolios, but the issue is blocking them out of the portfolio loop. You can create specific category page templates to lock down an entire category from an archive perspective as well.

Portfolios are just posts, so how did you “master restricting post categories”?
