Hi Radu, found the issue, the Jetpack plugin comments feature wasn’t playing nice with the Kleo theme, deactivated just that feature of Jetpack and now blog comments work again. Thanks for your time.

Hi Radu, I did both, bulk edited/comments – allow/update, and also confirmed individual posts had the allow comments checkbox checked. Still have the same issue, any attempt to add comments to a post/blog returns a “Sorry, comments are closed for this item” message.
