- We had the third virtual meeting of the club with the participation of District Authorities of D-5240. They are very interested in the development of our club and offered us support in many ways. In advance “Thanks”!
- The official entry of three new club members. To those we say “Welcome”. This event is very special, because one of the important points we have discussed in the virtual meeting with the district authorities, was the increase of our Membership.
- For the great coincidence that our colleague Rodrigo Nuñez from Chile prepared a program about “Earthquakes and Tsunamis” and just a few days later, Chile was hit by a major Earthquake. As Rotary Club we want to express our support to Rodrigo, Julio, Marcela and Yeanile our colleagues and to all the people of Chile in this hard time and tell them that they are not alone, because “Rotary” and the Rotarians will always be present in places where there`s a need for humanitarian help.

She says, “I’m interested in looking beyond the jargon. Social impact, social enterprise, impact investing, social innovation – these are all part of a new taxonomy that looks at the crossroads of business and social impact. Buzzwords, some would say. Rethink social. What has worked, what hasn’t? Why? Is scale the answer? I cover the people concocting solutions, tinkering away till they find a viable answer. The Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting in Washington, DC has funded some of my recent reporting on global health, which appeared in the Atlantic and Guardian.” Besides Rotary and the Global Polio effort, her interests include: social enterprise, technology for social impact, filmmaking, documentaries, and social entrepreneurship.

Famous People Who Have Dyslexia

by Les Esposito

JUST WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?

Dyslexia is commonly described as a learning disability. It is a problem that manifests as a difficulty with written language, especially reading and spelling. Although dyslexia is the result of neurological differences, it is not an intellectual disability. It occurs at all levels of intelligence, from average, to above average, and even in highly gifted individuals.A person who has dyslexia has difficulties in learning how to decode at the word level, difficulty in spelling, and in reading fluently or accurately. Dyslexia is distinct from reading difficulties having other causes. Such other unrelated causes could be with vision or hearing, or poor or inadequate reading instruction.
There are three subtypes of dyslexia: auditory, visual and attentional. Yet, individual cases of dyslexia may be better explained by certain neuropsychological deficits and simultaneous learning disabilities. Those might include: attention-deficit or hyperactivity disorder, or a math disability.
Unfortunately, dyslexia has no “cure” in the everyday sense of the word. Yet, dyslexic individuals can learn to read and write with suitable education. Research indicates that that specialized phonics instruction can help with reading deficits. It is estimated that dyslexia in the U.S. occurs from five to nine percent of school-aged children, though some have said up to 17 percent.

FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO HAVE OR HAD DYSLEXIA

The list of notable people who have or had dyslexia is quite amazing. Just consider those listed below. In each case, the individual overcame dyslexia and went on to amazing career accomplishments.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Agatha Christie

This famous writer is considered to be the world’s best-selling book writer of all time. Her sales were only surpassed by sales of the Bible and equaled by sales the plays of Shakespeare. Her works sold in billions of copies worldwide. She suffered from dyslexia, yet it never stopped her creativity. She learned how to write, and her mystery novels are treasured by many. Her bestselling book was “And Then There Was None.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="998" img_size="450 × 598" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1003" img_size="487 Ă— 640" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Albert Einstein

This great physicist and mathematician was one of the greatest minds of his century. Yet, Albert Einstein was known to suffer from dyslexia. He was troubled by a bad memory and constantly failed to memorize the simplest of things. It was reported that he would not remember the months in the year. Nevertheless, he could solve some of the most complicated mathematical formulas without difficulty. It is even said that he never learned how to properly tie his shoelaces. Yet, his relativity theory still has a major place in the achievements of physics over the past one hundred years.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Alexander Graham Bell

While we know him as the inventor of the telephone, did you know that Alexander was actually attempting to find a way to make the deaf hear? He was sensitive to the disability of deafness because his mother was slowly becoming deaf when Alexander was a child. He wanted to cure the deaf using the primitive technology of his time. He had dyslexia that showed up in problems at school. Nevertheless, he always maintained an interest in science, and biology.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="999" img_size="492 Ă— 640" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1001" img_size=" 507 Ă— 640" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Cher

Cher began life as a fatherless child in a poor family. Her mother worked in entertainment, singing and acting. Cher wanted to follow in her footsteps. Because of her dyslexia, Cher decided she would quit school and study acting in Los Angeles. She wanted to do what she loved in life. The story is told that, while at Aldo’s Coffee Shop, her life changed when she met Sonny Bono. They eventually became a highly-successful entertainment team.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo was an Italian polymath, that is, a skilled: mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, writer and even a musician. He conceived ideas incredibly ahead of his own time. He imagined and designed a helicopter, a tank, a solar powered weapon, the calculator, and the double hull for ships. He even postulated a theory of plate tectonics. Yet, he also had the burden of dyslexia. It was speculated that he wrote his notes backwards for confidentiality or security. But, this is a trait shared by many left-handed dyslexic people. Dyslexic writers may not even be aware that they are writing backwards.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1007" img_size="468 Ă— 640" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1008" img_size="516 Ă— 607" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Magic Johnson

This is the famous NBA basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson is one of the most popular of the NBA basketball players. He is well-known for passing and dribbling skills, and for a cheerful nature. He once explained his feelings about dyslexia as, “The looks, the stares, the giggles … I wanted to show everybody that I could do better and also that I could read.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Thomas Edison

We all know Edison for the invention of the phonograph and the light bulb. But in school, he was weak at mathematics, unable to focus, and had difficulty with words and speech. Because of dyslexia, he only had three months of formal schooling. His deafness was most likely caused by scarlet fever during childhood and recurring middle ear infections. He was dyslexic, a problem child, and called a mischief-maker. Edison had no patience. He was not well-coordinated and did poorly at sports. Yet, his secret was that he was diligent and applied his passion to whatever caught his attention. He overcame his dyslexia and had monumental successes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1013" img_size=" 500 Ă— 640" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1012" img_size="513 Ă— 640" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Winston Churchill

Churchill readily admitted that he had a “speech impediment,” something he worked to overcome. After many years, he stated, “My impediment is no hindrance.” While the Stuttering Foundation of America claimed that Churchill stammered, the Churchill Centre concluded that he lisped. His impediment may also have been something called, cluttering, a description for a problem which would explain a lack of attention to unimportant details, combined with a secure ego.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Woodrow Wilson

This president of the United States did not learn to read until he was 12 years old. It is not clear whether his reading difficulty indicated dyslexia or A.D.D. As a youth, he taught himself shorthand to compensate. He applied determination and self-discipline to his academic studies and studied at home. He was taught by his father.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1015" img_size="482 Ă— 600" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="1005" img_size="373 Ă— 599" animation="animate-when-almost-visible" css_animation="el-appear"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]

Still another example from entertainment is James “Jay” Leno, the well-known comedian and television host. From 1992 to 2009, he was host of NBC’s The Tonight Show. During a 2007 interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Leno confirmed that he is dyslexic.
