In order to change any buddypress language, you should use the .po file. It’s not as difficult as it seems, but can be a bit tedious and time consuming if you are changing a lot of the labels. Cool thing is, you never loose the changes via updates. Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found here:

I’ve used this method several times to change every Buddypress label (even on the backend).

Do not import any fields if you are using ones that you created. The import option is for gaining the same profile fields that are in the demo of the theme.

Just create your own and they will appear in the theme options.
