@sharmstr thank you so much for the detailed reply, it helped me to look into all sorts of possibilities further.

first, it’s the steps for importing, copied from the .xml file (in the theme manual and youtube video it’s all the same)
<!– To import this information into a WordPress site follow these steps: –>
<!– 1. Log in to that site as an administrator. –>
<!– 2. Go to Tools: Import in the WordPress admin panel. –>
<!– 3. Install the “WordPress” importer from the list. –>
    <!– 4. Activate & Run Importer. –>
<!– 5. Upload this file using the form provided on that page. –>
<!– 6. You will first be asked to map the authors in this export file to users –>
<!– on the site. For each author, you may choose to map to an –>
<!– existing user on the site or to create a new user. –>
<!– 7. WordPress will then import each of the posts, pages, comments, categories, etc. –>

i was able to open the file dialogue and selected the .xml file (only 492kb), also the upload limit reads (Maximum size: 10 MB) next to the Choose File button.
then i clicked the Upload file and import button and it returned the blank page with just a title “Import WordPress” and nothing else (my screen shot from previous post).

So i was at step 5 and stuck there, not able to proceed to step 6 where it asks to select a user i.e. admin to map the author like you described that you were able to do so.

when i googled this issue, most seemed to be server issues with shared hosting, e.g. upload limit, php memory limit and php max run time limit that’s why all the solutions i can find suggested breaking the file into small chunks (thus bypassing all the php limits).
while i’m on a VPS, and able to modulate php settings and tried all sorts of different php values, that did not make a difference. Not to mention i just moved & restored another php forum app to the same server last week with a 130MB mysql database.

could it be the import plugin itself is broken or incompatible?
searching through the plugin comment page there’re many same issues but the author never responds.

OMG i’m pulling my hair out!!! can’t believe such an easy task can be so frustrating. T_T#

oh and thank you again @sharmstr please help me if there’s more you can think of. And where the heck is 7th staff?!
