Hi folks
Thank you for your replies. I’ve looked into the pmpro add-ons and they don’t do quite what I want, but the fact is that the Kleo theme options already handle the check for which level a member is assigned to, all I now need is to add an additional check as to whether that member is “active” or “pending”.
If nothing else, can you please refer me to the code which handles the levels check and I’ll try to work out my own function for the rest.
With many thanks in advance.
NikkinikbParticipantHi Radu
Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately that would seem to mean that sign-up would become a two-part process ie. users sign-up for Buddypress but are only prompted for payment when they try to log in which is definitely not ideal and quite frankly rather confusing.
I think/hope I may have found a better solution by using the PMPro sign-up page with the Register Helper to gather additional information which is then synced with the Buddypress profile fields. It’s still not ideal and I’m quite surprised that BP and PMPro don’t work better together but appreciate that’s not necessarily a “theme issue”.
I do appreciate your input which has at least proved that I’m probably not overlooking another simpler solution.
Regards
NiknikbParticipantThank you Kieran and that makes more sense than when I read the documentation from rtMedia. It’s a shame it seems it’s not possible to change the name of the default album without paying for an additional plug-in (as I don’t personally feel “Wall Posts” is very intuitive) but hey… that’s an issue with rtMedia and nothing to do with your theme 😉
nikbParticipantWow… thank you so much for the quick response Kieran. What a rookie error on my part but thank you so much, that worked fine 😉
nikbParticipantWell I was hoping to avoid having to install yet another plug-in, and one that hasn’t been updated for over 7 years(!) doesn’t appeal much… but if there’s really no other way, I may download it just to see how it works at least 😉
It’s a shame your theme doesn’t handle this as I can’t imagine it’s an uncommon requirement, but I guess it’s the complexity of the way the sidebars work in other scenarios that makes it tricky to implement for Buddypress too.
Thanks for your support anyway.
nikbParticipantThank you for your reply Laura.
I can see two options there ie. Login redirect for Popup* and Homepage redirect* which both seem to control what happens when users log IN, but nothing to set what happens when users log OUT (which seems to default to showing them the same page as they were on before they logged out).
Am I missing something?
nikbParticipantHi Laura
Thank you for your reply.
a solution would be to create a trial level that after X days the user is asked to pay to continue or it expires and the user is asked to select a paid one.Unfortunately that wouldn’t be acceptable because it would effectively mean anyone could sign-up and view private member information without any commitment. Of course, I could set the permissions levels so that pages are restricted to those on trial memberships, but I can already do that for those who get signed up as users prior to payment (ie. prior to becoming members) so it doesn’t really help.
In case anyone else is interested, I have actually found that that by using the PMPro Helper Add-On, it’s possible to add extra fields to the PMPro sign-up page (which are then added to the BuddyPress profile) which is a partial solution to my issue… however, to add those fields to the BuddyPress Extended Profile (which is what I need) requires the premium/paid version of PMPro which I am reluctant to commit to at this stage as we only have a very small membership and simply wouldn’t be cost effective. (With a bit of time, I could possibly work out how to code a way to add the fields to the Extended Profile myself, but in the meantime, I’ve been looking into alternative plug-ins to see if they handle things any differently and the best I’ve found so far is “Memberships 2” which allows the use of the BuddyPress register page as part of the Memberships 2 sign-up ie. membership AND user profile are created at the same time.)
But another solution for you, as you are not using credit card but check, why not delete paid membership pro and use Buddypress Members Only plugin to restrict the site?
This would certainly be a good solution if we ONLY accepted checks, but once live we will also be accepting credit card payments so also need that option to be available too. Again, having tested “Memberships 2” as an alternative option, this shows check payments as pending until Admin indicates otherwise, which suits our purposes in this respect.
In summary, although I’m finding the interface of “Memberships 2” is not quite as user-friendly and since it’s obviously not so well integrated with Kleo, I’m needing to tweak the css/pages somewhat, it does seem to fulfull our specific needs a little better overall. (Obviously this isn’t a fault with your theme, which seems to be working very well so far, but thought I’d mention in case it’s useful for anyone else who similar needs.)
Warm regards
NiknikbParticipantThank you and enjoy your weekend. I’ll mark this one as closed for now.

NiknikbParticipantHi Kieran
Thank you so much for your prompt reply – good to know I’m not the only one working on a Saturday night 😉
1. No problem I will start a new ticket for this as a feature request. (I’ve been doing some more research of my own and came across someone describing it as splitting out the notifications into to their own individual menu items: ‘notifications’ ‘messages’ and ‘friend requests’, rather than them all being under the notification drop down. This is more along the line of the way Facebook handles things and consequently I feel, more intuitive for users.)
2. Thank you and I can see that works. To be honest, I’d far rather just have an icon that’s there all the time, but changes colour when there are notifications (again similar to our friends at Facebook) but this certainly isn’t a major issue at this stage.
3. Thank you and that works perfectly! I had already realised that I couldn’t just remove the “Everyone” option completely without breaking things, but simply hiding it is enough to reassure users that there isn’t a potential for their private stuff to be displayed to the world.
Warm regards
NiknikbParticipantHi Kieran
Thank you for getting back to me and comments on your replies (numbered) as follows –
1. It’s a pity about the notifications because as it currently stands, let’s say a user has one new email and one new “at” mention, the “live notifications” will be showing 2 and the “live messages” will be showing 1 which at a casual glance implies there 3 new items to view and might confuse some users. I guess I’ll just have to use “live notifications” for now but to be able to show the “ats” separately would definitely be a useful feature in the future.
2. Of course, I realise I can change the colour of the bubble. I guess with some tweaking I could change the bubble into an icon which would only appear when there are new notifications. Not ideal though… I may just have to leave it as it is.
3. The solution you mention hides the “who can see this field” altogether, whereas I only want to hide the “Everyone” option so that it can’t be selected (but I still want users to be able to choose from “All Members”, “Friends Only” or “Just Me”).
With many thanks again and any thoughts particularly on 3 above would be appreciated.
Warm regards
